What is Carers Voice Network?

Carers Support West Sussex (CSWS) is committed to placing carers at the heart of all we do to achieve the best possible personal outcomes for every carer. Carers Voice Network (CVN) is one of the initiatives of CSWS for Carers that aspires to relay united voices of family & friend carers. It gives Carers opportunity to voice concerns and issues that affect them. It is a place for carers to have their voices heard at local, county and national levels.

Why is it Important?

CVN is important because as Carers you can:

  • Influence Change
  • Point out what is overlooked
  • Develop a service with your experience
  • Strengthen the change by being a collective voice.

How can I help?

Carers Voice Network (formerly known as Carers Voice) members can assist in supporting Carers Support West Sussex with publicity, consultation, recruitment, developing new services etc. CVN members can also help plan carers events, run support groups and influence and improve all matters concerning the wellbeing of Carers at a strategic level.

What support will I get?

Training will be provided to all the members of Carers Voice Network by “Be the Voice” carer network.

What will I do?

All carers registered with CSWS are listened to and are encouraged to engage

  • Carers are encouraged to feedback on CSWS service provision at every stage (including complaints)
  • Help CSWS shape their service: Feedback on website; interview new staff; help plan activities and events; advice on improving services.
  • Participate in surveys or meetings to help develop strategies, policy and procedures to support carers in West Sussex and South East of England.
  • Make change and influence society to campaign for carers rights and issues at a regional and national level through participation

Mark Hughes is the Carers Voice Network representative/Chair of the Carers Planning Group.

Mark worked for Sussex Community NHS Trust for many years, in the payroll team and then in the information team, collecting data for reports to service managers, Trust Board, Commissioners and the Department of Health. He was then retired due to health problems, which included kidney failure and depression.

Not ready for pipe and slippers, Mark created Worthing Rethink, a support group for carers of people who suffer with mental health problems. The purpose of the group was to educate carers about the mental health services, to help them understand and navigate the system. Since then Mark has become a Trust Governor for Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to promote carer issues within the Trust -

Mark joined the Carers Planning Group, as the Chair and the Carers Voice representative, which plans events to raise awareness of carers issues and to find and help carers recognise their role in society (see sidebar for notes of meetings and terms of reference).

Very often carers don't recognise the amazing role they do and the support that is out there for them. Carers Support West Sussex is the premier carer organisation in West Sussex and their Carers Voice Network is a privilege Mark enjoys being part of and recommends other carers to join so that their voice is heard.

In addition, Mark is also a committee member for South Eastern Kidney Patients Association (SEKPA) who try to make the lives of kidney patients that little bit better.

When Mark isn't doing the above his hobbies include geocaching (searching for treasure using satellites), walking, reading and listening to music.

Members get together every three months to discuss issues in a venue and time agreed by the Carers Voice members.

You do not need to attend all the meetings if you prefer you can send us your views via email, telephone or post.

Come and join Carers Voice and become the voice of the silent carers
