Carers Support out and about for Carers Rights Day

Carers Support West Sussex has spent Carers Rights Day (25th November), speaking to carers about their rights.

We had information points at more than 20 different locations across the county, including hospitals and libraries in towns and villages including Billingshurst, Crawley, Horsham, Worthing and Haywards Heath.

We also hosted a Facebook Q&A where carers were invited to ask questions about their rights as a carer.  Our Carer Services and Locality Manager Jane Brown was on hand to answer even the trickiest of questions.

Here are some pictures from today's event.

Alcohol Awareness Week highlights impact on Carers
    Alcohol Awareness Week

Carers Support West Sussex is highlighting the impact alcohol can have on those who care for someone with an alcohol issue.

For Alcohol Awareness Week (14-20 November), the West Sussex charity says it has more than 400 people on its register who care for someone with an alcohol or drug related issue.

Jane Brown, Carer Services and Locality Manager said:

“Caring for someone with an alcohol issue can put a huge strain on your physical and emotional wellbeing.  There are so many emotions carers go through”

Carers Support West Sussex runs nine support groups* every month for carers of someone with an alcohol or drug issue.  Many of the issues raised include:

    • Shame
    • Stigma
    • Hopelessness
    • Guilt
    • Domestic violence

    Jane continued:

“We hear so many stories in our support groups of carers not being able to cope with the strain being put on them.  The ripple effects of alcohol misuse spread far and wide.”

Carers Support West Sussex can provide information and support for anyone who is caring for someone who is frail, has a long term condition or learning disability.  Telephone 0300 028 8888 or email info@carerssupport.org.uk.

Carers Support extends Carer Response Line hours
    Carer Response Line 3

Carers Support West Sussex is to open its Carer Response Line - 0300 028 8888 - on Saturdays for the first time from the 5th November.

The West Sussex charity, which provides support to more than 16,000 Family and Friend Carers, will open the line from 10am – 12pm on Saturday mornings following feedback from Carers around the county.

The move means the Carer Response Line, which provides information and support, will now be open:

    • Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm
    • Wednesdays 9am - 7pm
    • Saturdays 10am - 12pm

Carers Support West Sussex Chief Executive Jennie Musgrove said:

“The move to extend our Carer Response Line opening hours to include Saturday mornings has been driven by Carer views and needs.“

“We know that for many family and friend Carers it can be hard to find the time to call during the week because of work, family and caring commitments.  We hope that by opening the line on a Saturday morning it can give those Carers an opportunity to call us at a time more convenient to them. Our services are already reaching carers in hospitals at the weekends so this is a natural extension to make life a little easier for people.”

Anne Hardy who oversees the Carer Communication Service commented:

“The Carer Response Line is a key part of what we offer and I’m delighted that we’re now able to extend to a Saturday morning for the first time.  There are in excess of 84,000 Carers in West Sussex and this number is growing every year. We want to remove all barriers to Carers getting the information and advice which can so often help avoid a crisis later on”.

    Volunteer Day

Carers Support West Sussex has celebrated the work of its volunteers who play such a vital role in helping the charity support family and friend carers across the county.

Carers Support West Sussex has celebrated the work of its volunteers who play such a vital role in helping the charity support family and friend carers across the county.

At an annual ‘Volunteer Day’ held at the Dome in Worthing on 14th September, a group of  our committed volunteers met to talk about new ways of working to support some of the 84,000 carers in West Sussex.  The day included group discussion and hearing from volunteers and some fun dance entertainment as well as a ‘thank you’ from Chief Executive Jennie Musgrove.

But Carers Support West Sussex is also calling on more people to come forward to give a little  time to help carers who collectively save the UK economy an estimated £4,000 a second.*

    Chief Executive Jennie Musgrove said:

“Our volunteers are the lifeblood of Carers Support and we simply wouldn’t be able to do what we do without their invaluable contribution.  Many of our volunteers are, or have been, a family or friend carer themselves and so have a unique understanding of the challenges caring can bring. That is invaluable and I am overwhelmed by our volunteers’ talents and knowledge.  We are extremely lucky to have such great  people working with us.

    Jennie Continued:

“Carers Support is always looking for more volunteers and in our charity  we have volunteering opportunities which would require just four  hours of someone’s time each  month.  That is less time than we spend on our smartphones.

    Volunteer Coordinator Pam Thomson said:

“It was a fantastic day and a great opportunity for our volunteers to meet one another in a social setting while helping to shape volunteering for the future.

“Our volunteers bring experience, understanding and empathy into Carers Support in a way you simply can’t find anywhere else.  Working with them to support carers in West Sussex is such a pleasure.”

    UCAS Tick Box Success

Carers Support West Sussex is today welcoming the news that the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) will, from 2018, add a tick box to its application form to allow applicants to identify themselves as a carer.

The move follows a campaign by student carer Carol Hayward, 21, started back in February where she called for a change to the UCAS form so that universities could easily find out whether applicants would be studying as well as caring, unpaid, for someone with an illness, disability, mental health problem or an addiction.  With the help of Carers Trust and other local carers charities, a petition gained more than 2,500 signatures in just six weeks.

UCAS has now confirmed that in 2018, there will be a specific option on its Apply form.

Jennie Musgrove, Chief Executive of Carers Support West Sussex said:

“This is a very positive move by UCAS and will ensure universities are aware of student carers.  It’s now up to the universities themselves to use this information and provide student carers with the support they need and deserve.”

     Carol, added:

"I know from first-hand experience how difficult it is being a student but also a carer. I am really thrilled today to have learnt that UCAS will be improving their form for carers at the earliest possible date."

Alison Duggin, Young Adult Carer and Community Team Leader said:

‘Young Adult carers at university have a 29% drop out rate, which is 4 times greater than the national average for degree courses.  That UCAS forms will include a tick box for Young Adult Carers to identify themselves as such is a welcome move.  Not only will this option enable Young Adult Carers to let universities know they’re caring for someone, but it should help reassure them that they’re not alone, that universities are recognising the value of their caring role and impact this could have on their studies.  It will also encourage Young Adult Carers to see what support is available to them to support their caring role whilst studying at university.’

Research from Carers Trust recently found that.

    • Half of young adult carers in college or university are struggling because of their caring role.
    • Young adult carers are four times more likely to have dropped out of college or universities than students without caring roles.
    • 14% of young carers in school said they would not go to college or university because of their caring role.
    • 24% of young adult carers in school said they could not afford to go to college or university, while 41% are unsure.
