Carers Week is an annual awareness campaign to bring caring right out into the open – recognising and celebrating the contribution carers make to families and communities throughout the UK. Carers Week 2020 will be held 8-14 June.

Getting Carers Connected

The theme of Carers Week 2019 was ‘Getting Carers Connected’.  All the details of what we did to connect carers, including events, activities and drop-ins can be found below.

Connected to Advice and Information

This is Becca.  She’s a parent carer to her son Alfie, who is autistic.  Becca is amazing and has been talking to Carers Support about being a carer and how we’ve supported her and her family.  If you’d like more information about what services we can offer Parent Carers, you can head to our Parent Carer page.

Connected to Services

Our amazing Hospital Team supports carers at acute and community hospitals in West Sussex and Redhill in Surrey. Meet John and Suzana who”ve been talking about what they do day-to-day.  Find out more on our Hospital Team Page.

Connected to Friends and Family

Our PAPA workshops support people caring for autistic adults 16+. We run a number of them around the county and have been given great feedback by those who have gone along. Penny talks about why they can be so helpful to carers.   Find out more about the workshops here

Connected to other carers

Adeelah is our Carer Engagement Co-ordinator and works with different communities across West Sussex. Here she talks about linking up people through their own community groups and how Carers Support can help facilitate that.

Connected to Technology

Lynn is our Carer Equipment Service Lead and has helped support thousands of carers access equipment to support them in their caring role. If you’d like to know more about the service, head to our Carer Equipment Service page

Weald and Downland Living Museum – Tuesday June 11th

Thank you to everyone who came along to the Weald and Downland Museum on Tuesday 11th July.  We had some great weather and more than 80 carers join us for the day.  Some of the feedback we received included:

“The weather put its hat on for all carers today and the museum is so calming and peaceful just what carers need every now and again.”

“It was a wonderful day we really enjoyed it xx”

“Thank you for a beautiful afternoon”

Carers Coffee Morning – Tuesday 11th June

Thank you to all the carers who took advantage of some free coffee and cake during our Carers Week coffee morning at Squires Garden Centre in Crawley.  Thank you to Squires for hosting a tremendous event and for all the support they continue to show us.

“…it was a really enjoyable morning, especially meeting people in a similar situation to myself, looking after elderly parent(s).  It was my first social event with Carers Support and I hope to be able to go to another one again.”

Cooking for Carers – Thursday 13th June

Thank you to everyone who came along to this fantastic event.

Robin van Creveld from Community Chef  prepared some amazing food during his cookery demonstration and was so warm and engaging with carers and staff on the day.

“What a wonderful and inspiring idea! J Thank you from someone who doesn’t normally go to carer events – much appreciated!”

“A fantastic morning, learning a great cuisine and taking in lots of cooking tips. Enjoyed a lovely lunch, thanks. Great event!”

“Overall this was excellent – the organisation of the event was done well with good prior communication about what/where/when etc. The cooking demo was very helpful and to see how everything was done – close up and in real time – provides a lot more confidence in trying this type of cooking (which I have not done before as it seemed a little complex). Robin is a great presenter as well as chef, and to try the food was a nice bonus!”

“A wonderful few hours filled with warmth and a sense of community along with superb food! Thank you”

Horsham Parkrun – Saturday 15th June

There were more than 500 people at the Horsham Parkrun and it was great that we got a shoutout at the start.  Thank you to everyone who came and said ‘hi’ and well done to everyone for completing the 5k course.
